On June 17, 2024, the City of Fort Myers approved a new Parks & Recreation Master Plan that incorporates bird-friendly design standards in the section “Goals, Objectives, and Actions.”
For the development of new parks and facilities, and the revitalization of current parks and facilities, the master plan specifically states that park and facilities development should "also provide opportunities to address environmental challenges, albeit in a very limited way, such as local stormwater management issues, urban heat island effect, biological diversity, ecological habitat restoration, and the incorporation of bird-friendly design standards."
That's good news for birds! Up to a billion birds die in collisions with windows each year. Any amelioration to any one facility or dwelling represents one fewer hazard. Check out our page on bird-friendly design for more information about what you can do for the birds.
